MANILA – The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has installed a cutting-edge document examination laboratory at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

In a news release Thursday, Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco said the installation of the state-of-the-art Video Spectral Comparator will bolster the bureau’s capabilities in detecting fraudulent documents.

The new equipment, which was intalled at MCIA on Wednesday, provides advanced forensic inspection, including the analysis of watermarks, microprints, and other security features critical in identifying counterfeit documents.

He said the establishment of the laboratory is part of a broader initiative supported by the Australian government, which donated the sophisticated equipment and provided specialized training for BI personnel.

The same laboratory has already been established in Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Davao International Airport, Clark International Airport and BI main office in Intramuros, Manila.

Meanwhile, BI Anti-Fraud Section chief Marivic Beltrano highlighted the significance of the new facility.

“The opening of this laboratory is a crucial step in our ongoing efforts to combat document fraud. With this new laboratory, our ability to intercept fraudulent documents is significantly enhanced, ensuring greater security at our borders,” she said.

The BI also reported the deployment of new machinery, personnel, and resources to support the Cebu Connect, an initiative at the MCIA which aims to enhance the airport's transfer service system, making connections more efficient and seamless for passengers.

In partnership with the Aboitiz GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (AGMCAC), the BI deployed its personnel to help transform MCIA into a major transit hub in Southeast Asia. The initiative is part of a larger vision to position Cebu as an ideal entry point for both domestic and international travelers.

"The BI is committed to supporting Cebu Connect by providing advanced resources and skilled personnel. This partnership will significantly improve passenger processing times and enhance overall airport security,” Tansingco said.

As part of the Cebu Connect initiative, a new section of the MCIA's terminal has been opened to provide expedited immigration services for transiting passengers. (PNA)
