CEBU CITY – The economic boost expected from the PHP7.6-billion mega reclamation project that will house a new commercial center, business hub, economic zone and recreation park will strengthen Lapu-Lapu’s posture in the global arena as a premier resort city.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan, in his speech during the city’s 63rd Charter Anniversary celebration on Monday, said he is excited about the prospects of the 100-hectare project and many others.

“I am confident that with the strong support of our partners, we will be able to realize our shared vision for Lapu-Lapu City,” Chan said.

The mayor also mentioned the construction of the PHP24.8-billion Lapu-Lapu Expressway that will connect the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway to Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

He also highlighted the Cebu-Mactan fourth bridge that will connect Barangay Ibo of Lapu-Lapu City to Mandaue City.

This project, worth 120 billion Japanese yen or about PHP50 billion, is on its feasibility study stage conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, through the assistance of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Chan said the city is likewise coordinating with the DPWH to speed up the completion of the Mactan Circumferential Road, construction of drainage systems and the rehabilitation of government buildings and facilities damaged by Typhoon Odette in December 2021.

He said Lapu-Lapu City is also a recipient of the national government’s socialized housing program.

On June 17, 1961, the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. signed into law Republic Act 3134 which created the Charter of the City of Lapu-Lapu.

“Moving forward to the present, our faith in the Almighty, coupled with our burning desire to lead better lives, fuels the fire that consciously illuminates and navigates the way towards our vision of a progressive, competitive and world-class Lapu-Lapu City,” Chan said. (PNA)
