MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday slammed a social media post showing an actor clad in police uniform while endorsing a candidate in the forthcoming elections.
In a statement, Brig. Gen. Roderick Alba, PNP public information office chief, said they have demanded the immediate removal of the photo from social media.
“We demand the owner of the concerned Facebook page to immediately take down this picture and issue a public apology without prejudice to any legal action that the PNP may take,” said Alba, referring to a Facebook post of actor Marc Manicad in police uniform while openly endorsing the presidential bid of Vice President Leni Robredo.
Alba maintained that the PNP stands firm on its non-partisan stance, noting that police officers are asked to refrain from engaging in partisan political activities.
“The PNP has nothing to do with this. We take offense in this unwarranted misrepresentation of the police organization for purposes of political mileage and propaganda. It is certainly most unfair and uncalled for especially that it may lead to confusing the general public,” he added.
He also warned those who intend to tarnish the reputation of the police force at the height of the election season.
"Rest assured that this incident won’t pass without holding those responsible accountable for their action,” he stressed.
Earlier, PNP chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos said all police officers on active duty should remain apolitical even in their social media posts and refrain from campaigning for or against any candidate. (PNA)
