LEGAZPI CITY – The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Bicol will hold a roadshow on capital formulation to increase funds for expansions for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the region in Naga City this July 11.

In an interview on Thursday, Arlyn Joy Alarcon, SEC-Bicol information officer, said they expect at least 150 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from different provinces in the region as onsite participants, with a higher number coming from Camarines Sur province.

"The main goal is to introduce to them the capital market as an external fund source for MSMEs and also to encourage businesses to incorporate since most MSMEs are sole proprietorships," she said.

She said SMEs and startups can use crowdfunding as a fundraising method, allowing the public to invest in their business ideas through online platforms.

Under SEC Memorandum Circular No. 14, Series of 2019, SMEs no longer need direct SEC approval to solicit investments.

She said SMEs can raise PHP10 million to PHP50 million from qualified investors within 12 months through any of the country's three registered crowdfunding intermediaries or platforms.

Meanwhile, Norma Tan Olaya, SEC Legazpi Extension Office director, said a diversified approach to funding is crucial for the growth of MSMEs and startups.

"Exploring alternative solutions in the capital market not only enhances financial flexibility but also opens doors to broader opportunities for capital generation and business growth,” she said.

The SEC roadshow is now in Dumaguete City, in Naga City on July 11, and in Roxas City in Capiz in August.

The Naga City leg of the roadshow will feature a series of presentations and panel discussions led by speakers from the Philippine Stock Exchange, Investment & Capital Corporation of the Philippines, Eastern Securities Development Corporation (Round One), one of the registered crowdfunding portals, and other industry experts.

Participants will also have the opportunity to engage directly with experts during breakout sessions and consultation meetings.

These sessions are designed to provide personalized advice, discuss specific business challenges, explore tailored solutions, and offer insights on navigating the capital market.

Registration for the event is now open. Due to limited seating, interested participants are encouraged to sign up early at https://bit.ly/NGARshow to join via Zoom.
