MANILA – Newly installed Virac bishop Luisito Occiano on Wednesday called on the faithful to be armed with truth, goodness, and love in battling societal ills.

In his message during the installation rites at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and Parish, Occiano said he is ready to face a battle against evil, immorality, and indifferentism.

"In our battle against immorality, we must be enlightened by the truth, with indifferentism, let us enlighten them and invite them to join us, as I vow to lead with inclusivity. Our faith compels us to act with compassion, striving to be a diocese that reflects the teachings of Christ," he said.

Occiano also said the diocese of Virac would continue to serve as a "small place of refuge" for those who became lost in their faith, just like how the island province of Catanduanes served as a refuge for people who got lost and were battered by strong waves in the Pacific Ocean.

He also sought prayers from the faithful to help him in leading more than 300,000 Catholics in the diocese and to live up to the episcopal motto “Cum Gaudio Praedicare” or “To Proclaim the Good News with Joy.”

“As your new bishop, I am committed to listening to your hopes and concerns, to working alongside you, and to fostering a spirit of unity and love. Our mission is clear: to bring the message of the Gospel to all corners of our diocese, to be a beacon of hope, and to reflect Christ's love in all that we do. Let us embark on this journey with courage and trust in God's providence,” he added.

Occiano also thanked Bishop Emeritus Manolo Delos Santos for his three decades of service to the diocese, helping the Christian community grow in more than 50 parishes.

Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Charles Brown and Caceres Archbishop Rex Andrew Alarcon presided over Occiano's enthronement, which was attended by churchgoers, Bicol prelates, and Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula. (PNA)
