TACLOBAN CITY – The 2024 Eastern Visayas Regional Rescue Jamboree (RRJ) will highlight the application of technology to enhance disaster response in the region, an official of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said Tuesday.

OCD 8 (Eastern Visayas) Director Lord Byron Torrecarion said that for the first time, the RRJ would broadcast its events live, hoping that this would be part of the disaster response system.

“We will also try to leverage technology in this RRJ to, hopefully, broadcast live on-scene. It should be part of our system. We are also trying to innovate in leveraging to better respond to disasters and continue to evolve,” Torrecarion said during a press briefing here.

The RRJ, to be held at the Southern Leyte State University main campus in Sogod, Southern Leyte on July 3-9, is eyeing at least 1,500 participants.

The seven cities and 136 towns in the region are expected to send key officials and personnel of their respective local disaster risk reduction and management councils.

Other participants are accredited responders from non-government organizations.

Maximizing the use of technology is only one of the few things that the event seeks to achieve, according to Torrecarion.

The annual gathering, aimed at improving disaster preparedness and the response skills of accredited emergency response teams in the region, is anchored on the theme "Unity in Preparedness for Effective Response: Strengthening Partnerships for Disaster Resilience."

Hosted by the Southern Leyte provincial government, the invitational jamboree lined up activities to include various skills lectures and discussions, particularly on different search, rescue, and retrieval disciplines and disaster response systems.

The series of lectures aims to keep abreast of the latest theories of the local responders and align their response operations with the standards, according to Torrecarion. (With a report from Florence R. Dableo, OJT/PNA)
