DUMAGUETE CITY – The city government of this Negros Oriental capital is constructing a seawall wave deflector on Rizal Boulevard here to prevent erosion and destruction of the current walkway.

Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo said Monday the PHP54-million project will commence soon and is expected to be completed before the year ends.

The project covers 257 meters in length and will be widened towards the sea by eight meters, making a total of 12 meters from the current walkway, he said.

The height of the existing seawall will be maintained and once completed, the project will align with the existing Pantawan 1 and Pantawan 2 People’s Park.

Remollo said the project would not only protect the walkway from erosion but also the boulevard users during high tides and storm surges.

He said there is no need for an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources since the project is like road widening.

Only a Certificate of Non-Coverage from the DENR is required for the project to proceed. (PNA)
