BACOLOD CITY – The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) is coordinating with the Department of Education (DepEd) for the prompt release of the benefits of public school teachers who figured in a road accident in Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental on June 14.

In a statement on Friday, GSIS president and general manager Wick Veloso said they are closely working with the DepEd to ensure that the claims are released promptly.

“The GSIS is committed to ensure that their benefits are processed swiftly, offering relief during this difficult time,” he added.

Some 32 teachers of Paglaum Village Elementary School in this city were on their way home from a teambuilding event in San Carlos City when the Bacolod City tourist bus carrying them fell on its side along Purok Talus in Barangay Igmaya-an late Friday afternoon.

Teacher Arlyn Tolosa Verde, 42, died while her colleagues were injured and treated in various hospitals here.

According to the GSIS, the dependents of the deceased teacher are eligible to receive death, survivorship, funeral, and personal accident insurance benefits.

The injured teachers can avail of medical reimbursement through their personal accident insurance and may also file for an Employee’s Compensation claim related to the accident.

Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez earlier said the city government provided hospital assistance to all the injured passengers as he ordered an investigation into the fatal road accident.

Initial investigation showed the accident was caused by a brake fade, when the brake pads overheated due to friction, the mayor said. (PNA)
