CEBU CITY – More than 12,000 vehicle and motorcycle drivers were apprehended for traffic law violations in the first five months of 2024, a transportation official said Monday.

Glen Galario, regional director of the Land Transportation Office-Central Visayas, said 12,243 apprehensions were made during the period, 37.21 percent higher than the 8,914 posted during the same period last year.

Galario said the increase was a result of intensified traffic law enforcement operations.

“As per directive from the central office (of LTO), we have intensified the operations (which led) towards (that number of) apprehensions,” he said.

Operations have been intensified to ensure that the vehicles in Central Visayas are roadworthy, and to minimize accidents, he said.

Meanwhile, the LTO in the region also recorded apprehensions of a total of 36 colorum vans as of May 31, 2024, a figure more than double compared to the same period recorded last year.

The top five traffic violations in Central Visayas include failure to wear a prescribed seatbelt, operating with defective or without parts, reckless driving, disregarding traffic signs, and failure to wear seatbelts for front-seat passengers. (PNA)
