DAVAO CITY – Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) inside the Davao City Jail male dormitory got the chance to register for the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys).

A total of 329 PDL and two more Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) personnel registered for PhilSys on November 8, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

They are now part of the more than 40 million Filipinos who have completed the Steps 1 (demographic) and 2 (biometrics) registration for the Philippine Identification (PhilID) card or the national ID.

The registration forms part of PSA’s mobile registration strategy to cover more government and private institutions toward the goal of registering at least 50 million this year.

Adeline Batucan, Senior Statistical Specialist of PSA-Region 11, said in a recent interview that they have been conducting institutional registration in various agencies to help increase the rate of processed PhilSys registration.

In Davao City, PSA-11 conducted registration in the offices of the National Bureau of Investigation, Civil Service Commission, and real estate firm Damosa Land, Inc. in October.

The Philippine Postal Corporation will deliver their PhilID cards.

Signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens.

The national ID shall be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts.

It also seeks to boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present one ID during transactions. (PNA)
