LAOAG CITY – The city government of Laoag on Wednesday urged its senior citizens and residents with comorbidities to avail of the city's free coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine.
Mayor Michael M. Keon asked interested persons to coordinate with their village chief or barangay health workers for the ongoing vaccination registration, then wait for their schedule to be vaccinated.
“The number of persons to be vaccinated depends on the availability of vaccines provided by the Department of Health to the city,” he said in a statement.
Based on the Laoag City database, the priority groups consist of 17,000 people but the majority of them are still waiting to be vaccinated.
Done with his second dose of Covid-19 vaccine, Keon acknowledged that getting inoculated is the best way to get protection from the coronavirus.
Nelson Luz, a retired education program supervisor of the Schools Division of Ilocos Norte, echoed the mayor's sentiment, saying he was looking forward to getting vaccinated soon.
The city government is in the process of securing about PHP70 million for the exclusive purchase of Covid-19 vaccines for tricycle drivers, vendors, authorized persons outside residence, urban poor, persons with disabilities, and those in the working class, among others.
As of this posting, other local government units in the province have started vaccinating their senior citizens or those under the A2 category.
As of May 18, confirmed Covid-19 cases in Laoag have risen to 924 with 744 recoveries and nine deaths.
The public is strictly advised to keep their guards up by avoiding crowded places, observing physical distancing, and staying home if they feel unwell. (PNA)
