MANILA – Budget carrier Cebu Pacific (CEB) is appealing to local government units (LGUs) to allow domestic flights.
"We are appealing to the LGUs to allow us to mount flights. Otherwise, people will remain getting stranded at the (NAIA) airport," CEB spokesperson Charo Lagamon told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) Thursday night.
For the past few days, locally stranded individuals have been staying outside the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) terminal buildings or nearby areas. Most of them are hoping to catch a flight or be able to board the sweeper flights.
Lagamon said Davao, for instance, had limited the number of flights it would accommodate. As a result, local carriers could only mount one round-trip flight from a point of destination per week.
She said CEB has one Manila-Davao-Manila flight and one Cebu-Davao-Manila flight in a week.
"We used to have regular flights to and from Davao. But with the limitation, we had to cancel the other flights," Lagamon said, noting that some passengers of the canceled flights could have possibly gone to the airport.
It may be recalled that CEB made a late night announcement last June 5 regarding the cancellation of General Santos flights effective the following day until further notice.
The PNA sought the Manila International Airport Authority's (MIAA) comment as to how it handles passengers who had to deal with last-minute cancellation of flights. No response was provided as of posting.
The MIAA has been requesting passengers not to go to NAIA unless they have confirmed flights, saying that the passengers' prolonged stay outside the airport building may pose risks to their health.
Currently, only those with confirmed flight bookings for the day are allowed to enter the airport. (PNA)
