ILIGAN CITY -- A newborn baby was found abandoned Wednesday morning in Barangay 3, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, police said Thursday.

Residents in the area discovered around 11 a.m. the crying infant wrapped with black cloth, placed on the ground and covered with a leaf, a report from Malaybalay City Police Station (CPS) said.

Maj. Donald Cordero, chief of Malaybalay CPS, said the infant believed to have been born two hours before she was discovered because the umbilical cord was still attached.

"The blood is still fresh. The placenta and the umbilical cord are still attached to the baby. It was cut in the hospital," Cordero said in a phone interview.

He said the infant was found to "be very healthy, without wounds on her body and with no signs that she was physically hurt."

The area where the infant was discovered is near to a boarding house and a university.

Police said the infant is now at a hospital in Malaybalay and was given the medical attention she needs while authorities are coordinating with the City Social Welfare and Development office.

"Malaybalay CPS still conducting a follow-up investigation for possible identification and location of the mother while the motive of abandoning the baby is still to be determined," Cordero said. (PNA)
