ILOILO CITY -- After election duties, educators in Western Visayas will again prepare for the opening of classes, starting with the kick-off of the annual Brigada Eskwela to be launched in Silay City, Negros Occidental.
Dr. Victor G. de Gracia Jr., Officer-in-Charge at the Office of the Regional Director of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Western Visayas, said Silay City was the first division to volunteer to host the event on May 17.
The regional launching will be followed by a week-long school’s maintenance activity on May 20-25.
“Brigada Eskwela is already an institution. This is a collaboration, partnership with all stakeholders to prepare our school for the opening of classes,” he said in a phone interview on Friday.
He added that the Brigada Eskwela brings back the “bayanihan” spirit of volunteerism among stakeholders.
Among the activities include the cleaning of classrooms and repair of school facilities.
He said they would like to make sure that schools will be holding classes starting June 3.
Meanwhile, de Gracia appealed to all students to go back to school on June 3, adding that there are those who are likely to skip the first day of school.
The DepEd is expecting some 1,934,183 students in the region on school opening.
De Gracia added that this year, they have no problems when it comes to teachers after a massive hiring last year.
The construction of classrooms is almost done so the problem “is not as serious as before”, he said.
This year’s Brigada Eskwela is themed, “Matatag na Bayan Para sa Maunlad na Paaralan”. (PNA)
