DAVAO CITY -- The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Friday denied endorsing 10 senatorial candidates for the May 13 elections.

"This is pure fake news! Absolutely not true! Bishops and priests are not allowed to do that. That is clearly partisan politics," a statement released by Davao Archbishop and CBCP president Romulo G. Valles, DD, said.

Valles issued the statement following reports that CBCP released 10 names of senatorial bets it is supporting.

Reports quoting a certain Julieta Wasan, president of Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas, said CBCP endorsed all eight candidates of the opposition slate and two others running as independent.

Laiko is the implementing arm of the CBCP Episcopal Commission on the Laity.

"I repeat: The CBCP did not make any such endorsement!" Valles, however, said.

He said the CBCP continues to appeal to all Filipinos to vote wisely in the coming elections.

"Let us continue to pray to the Lord for peaceful, credible and honest elections," Valles said. (PNA)
